Local attractions

Domfront, located in the Orne department of Normandy, is a historic town steeped in medieval charm and natural beauty. Perched on a hilltop, it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with orchards and woodlands. The town’s rich history dates back to the Middle Ages, and its narrow, cobbled streets and ancient stone buildings evoke a sense of stepping back in time. Dominating the town is the impressive Château de Domfront, a fortress built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror’s father. Although the castle now lies in ruins, its remnants provide a fascinating glimpse into Domfront’s past as a strategic stronghold.
One of Domfront’s most striking features is its beautiful Romanesque architecture. The Église Saint-Julien, with its elegant arches and towering spire, is a must-visit for those interested in religious and architectural history. The church is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque design in the region. The town also has a vibrant local culture, with markets selling fresh produce, artisan goods, and traditional Norman specialties like cider, cheese, and calvados.
Beyond its historical and architectural allure, Domfront is surrounded by lush green landscapes perfect for outdoor activities. The region is known for its extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, including the popular Vélo Francette route, which takes travellers through scenic paths connecting Normandy with the Atlantic coast. Whether you’re exploring the history or enjoying the serene countryside, Domfront is a perfect destination for those seeking a mix of culture, history, and nature in the heart of Normandy.

Poiré, a traditional pear cider, holds a special place in the heart of Mantilly, a small village in the Orne department of Normandy. Mantilly is renowned as the “Capital of Poiré,” thanks to its long history of pear orchards and the crafting of this unique, refreshing beverage. Poiré is made from a specific variety of pears that thrive in the fertile soils and mild climate of the region, and its production follows time-honored methods passed down through generations. The result is a sparkling, light cider that showcases the delicate and slightly tangy flavours of the pears, offering a distinct alternative to the more commonly known apple cider of Normandy.
The production of Poiré in Mantilly is not just about creating a drink; it’s deeply rooted in the cultural identity of the village. Local farmers and producers take pride in their orchards, which are scattered across the rolling hills surrounding the village. Each autumn, the pear harvest becomes a community event, as the ripe fruit is gathered and pressed to begin the fermentation process. The importance of this craft is celebrated annually at the *Fête du Poiré*, a festival that brings together locals and visitors to enjoy tastings, traditional music, and festivities dedicated to the art of pear cider-making.
For visitors to Mantilly, exploring the world of Poiré offers a delightful way to connect with the region’s agricultural heritage and savor its natural flavours. Many local farms and producers open their doors for tours and tastings, allowing you to learn firsthand about the meticulous process of creating Poiré. Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with local cheeses, Poiré is a symbol of Mantilly’s rural charm and a testament to the village’s commitment to preserving its artisanal traditions.
